Friction Stir Welding Evaluation

New contact technique for friction stir welding (FSW) evaluation using laser ultrasound allows to estimate the quality of the joint local area in comparison with welding-free zone of an object. In this method pitch and catch configuration of wideband transducer (PLU-6N-02) was used for experimental investigations and tests with a number of aluminum weld joints. The results of laser ultrasound experiments were compared with the data of metallographic analysis.

First pulse of the optoacoustic signal track carry the information about weld joint structure. Optoacoustic signal attenuation along weld joint in samples 5 and 3 means the presence of the faulty fusion defect and this fact corresponds to the metallographic analysis.
